Surface Roughness Gauge
General Description
Surface varies with the materials, forming, processing, engineering function, and size of an object and the features are in general very complicated. Surface texture is traditionally greatly characterized by form, waviness and roughness among others, and the latter two are its key components.

Surface roughness is a key factor determining the quality as well as wear-resistance of rolls during the process of polishing, coating, plating, and processing steel sheet in steelmaking industry, which shall be subject to quality control. With the consumer's increasingly interest in surface roughness, on-line surface roughness control is very pressing in order to meet customer's needs.

The gauge is an on-line measurement system for measuring surface (Ra) and spatial frequency (PPI) by way of non-contact optical reflection method using laser, during production process of rolled steel sheet, enabling to predict when the roll is to be replaced through monitoring data measured.
